How to Care for Your Suits & Blazers : A Gentleman’s Guide to Timeless Style

At Twelve19Styles, we believe a well-tailored suit is more than just clothing—it’s a statement. Whether you’ve invested in one of our made-to-measure pieces or picked a signature blazer from our ready-to-wear collection, taking care of your garments ensures they stay sharp, season after season.

Caring for men’s suits doesn’t have to be a chore. Traditional suiting fabrics like wool, mohair, and cashmere are surprisingly resilient when treated with care. Follow these essential tips to keep your suits looking fresh, structured, and ready for your next power move.

1. Let It Breathe

Suits—especially those made from natural fibres—need air. Wool, for example, is semi-self-cleaning. The keratin in the fibress helps break down grime and sweat on its own. So, after wearing your suit, don’t just throw it into a cramped closet. Hang it up and let it breathe for a day or two.

Airflow helps the fabric dry naturally, prevents odours, and allows the fibres to rest and return to form. And if you’re short on time? Hang your suit in the bathroom while you take a hot shower—the steam will gently relax creases and refresh the material.

2. Rotate, Don’t Repeat

As much as you love that navy double-breasted stunner, wearing it too frequently without rest can wear it out. Just like your body, your suit needs downtime.

Always give it 24–48 hours of rest between wears. This simple habit allows the fabric to decompress, reduces creasing, and helps you avoid unnecessary trips to the dry cleaners.

3. Steam—Don’t Iron

Your suit is refined, and so should be your care routine. Ironing can damage delicate suiting fabrics unless the care label explicitly permits it. Instead, invest in a good-quality steamer. It’s gentler, quicker, and it does double duty by freshening up your suit and removing odour-causing bacteria.

A quick steam after each wear goes a long way in maintaining a crisp, polished look—no scorch marks, no shiny patches.

4. Spot Clean Smartly

Repeat after us: Not every mark requires dry cleaning.

Washing machines are a no-go, and dry cleaning should be reserved for special occasions. For everyday spots or small stains, gently dab with a damp, undyed cloth and a touch of mild detergent or fabric stain remover. Never scrub—it’ll fray the fibers and age your garment prematurely.

If in doubt, always test the product on a hidden area first. And when dry cleaning becomes necessary, always clean the jacket and trousers together to maintain color and texture consistency. Aim for no more than three dry cleans per year.

5. Hang with Intention

That flimsy plastic hanger? Bin it.

Always hang your suit jacket on a broad wooden hanger—preferably cedar. It preserves the shape of the shoulders, absorbs moisture, and wards off fabric-loving insects. For trousers, hang them from the hem using a felt-lined clamp hanger. This technique naturally smooths out wrinkles without creasing the fabric further.

Elevate the Lifespan of Your Style

A well-maintained suit tells its own story—one of confidence, discipline, and effortless elegance. And at Twelve19Styles, we’re here to make sure that story is timeless.
